Los Angeles Hazmat Drill

Preparing for a Terrorist Attack
or Hazardous Material Incident
Monday, June 12, 2000
8:00 am to Noon

CERT members were invited to play the part of contaminated victims in a mass decontamination/hazmat incident drill held at the Sports Arena. Notice was rather short on this, and it was a work day for many, so only 3 CERT members were in attendance. You can see from these pictures that this very serious business had its wet side. It is a good thing that the 'victims' had a change of clothes, no matter how nice and warm the day was.

This drill was part of the preparation for the Democratic National Convention as well as other mass gatherings. While the focus was on providing an efficient response to a terrorist event, what was learned during this drill applies as well to a refinery leak, a chemical tank truck accident, or any of a number of other events our technological advance has brought into possibility as an unwanted byproduct.
