Press Conference - 07/31/08

This morning Los Angeles Fire, Police, and City Council members, along with CERT volunteers, attended a press conference at the Northridge Fashion Center, the scene of major damage after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, to promote the city's readiness in the event of a major event.

Wendy Gruel, acting mayor, said the city is ready for any major event that occurs in the city. She was backed up by Councilmember Greig Smith and said Los Angeles was presented with an award from the Department of Homeland Security for our city's readiness.

Captain Stacy Gerlich asked citizens of Los Angeles to take the seven-week CERT class to be prepared in the event of any major event in the city. How to properly prepare before, during, and after an earthquake. The class teaches the ability to identify minor to major structural damage of a building. When to enter and when not to enter a damaged building. You can actually put out small fires during one of the classes.

Today's participants assured everyone the city of Los Angeles is ready to assist its people with whatever resources are needed in the event of any manmade or natural disaster that could occur.

Thank you to Bernard Falkin for these photos and the report.
