1999 Sanitation Drill
BUREAU OF SANITATION'S ANNUAL CITY EMPLOYEE REFRESHER EXERCISE
Thursday, May 6, 1999
At LAFD Disaster Preparedness Unit by Fire Station 88
5021 North Sepulveda Blvd. in Sherman Oaks
On May 6, 1999, the Bureau of Sanitation conducted its ninth annual CERT refresher exercise at LAFD's Disaster Preparedness Unit facility in Sherman Oaks. This drill was open to City employees only. The exercise consisted of four stations (disaster alley, search and rescue, medical operations, and incident command). At the conclusion of the exercise, we had the "coup de grace" (hose relay), which involved teams of 5-6 people advancing fire hose lines through and around various obstacles. The team of sanitation workers with the fastest time got to compete with the Fire Department instructors. The winner between these two teams received the year's bragging rights and the hose relay trophy. This year (after some controversy and sabotage by Fire Department Captain Jim Gaffney) a tie was declared. The two teams decided to a face-off, which is yet to be rescheduled. An impromptu water joust started, with the Bureau of Sanitation getting the wettest on that very hot day. Thanks to Cindy Kovacs (Bureau of Sanitation) and her staff. This was a fun-filled day.
