On Election Day, November 2, 2004, 16 Los Angeles fire stations were polling places. CERT members kept an eye on the fire stations and the equipment while the firefighters were out on runs, did crowd control, and carefully monitored the movement of cars and people when the firefighters were going in or out of the stations.

June 2004 Refresher
The June 2004 Los Angeles CERT Refresher was held on June 19 at Fire Station 88, 5101 N. Sepulveda, Sherman Oaks. We had Disaster Alley, worked with hoses, lifted huge slabs of concrete, and had a traffic module!

More Pictures are available here.
2004 BICEPP ERT Challenge On April 4, 2004, the BICEPP ERT Challenge for community teams was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Throughout the day, eight CERT teams (Snohomish County, Washington, and Burbank, Carson, Los Angeles - Green Hornets, Los Angeles - Palace Guards, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valley) trained and were tested on seven events. The Los Angeles Green Hornets placed first overall, and the Los Angeles Palace Guards placed second overall!
2004 Los Angeles Marathon On Sunday, March 7, 2004, CERT members worked at the finish line of the 2004 Los Angeles Marathon. With a record of 24,532 runners taking part in the marathon, and with temperatures pushing into the 80s by midday, we had a lot to do. We helped many runners to the medical tent, kept watch for those who needed help, and worked to set up cots for the overflow from the medical tent.
10th Anniversay of Northridge Earthquake CERT members participated in a press conference and an LAFD exercise to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake.

Hollywood Christmas Parade CERT members worked at the Hollywood Christmas Parade on November 30th, 2003. They were teamed with ham operators and experienced first aid workers. They had an area of responsibility on the parade route, walked that area and identified anyone who was sick or hurt. Then they called in a Rescue Ambulance and treated them until the ambulance arrived. Rescue Ambulances were assigned to the incident but couldn't rove around like a foot team.
On Monday morning, October 27, Captain Lee put the Battalion 12, 15 and 17 call-out contacts on standby to activate their teams to help with the evacuation from the Simi Valley fire area. A little later, the CERT members who had agreed to respond to Battalion 15 incidents were notified to report to Mason Park where, among many other jobs, they directed traffic in and out of the park, transported water and supplies to the shelter at Granada Hills High School, provided information to evacuees, and did a supply run to Home Depot to obtain donated masks.
2003 Fall Biannual We had a great time at our Fall 2003 Refresher on Saturday, October 25th. The day was very hot (about 100° F) and we set a new benchmark for attendance of any biannual refresher drill in the history of the program with our attendance very close to 500 attendees! Mayor Hahn and Fire Chief Bamattre addressed the crowd, we enjoyed working with fire hoses on large fires and made good use of the training space behind Fire Station 88.
Mass Casualty Incident Drill LAFD Division III held MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) training for the entire Division on four separate days. The scenario for the drill was an explosion at an office, with 20 patients. CERT members were invited to participate in the drill as survivors of the disaster who are already mobilized and working the incident upon the arrival of the Fire Department.

With his vision and foresight, Assistant Chief Greg West embraced the possibilities of the CERT program and its graduates. In command of Division III, Chief West ensured that CERT graduates and firefighters who participated in the Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) drills worked together, learned from each other and practiced sharing the tasks for each incident. With Chief West's support we had a new beginning with the LAFD to show our worth through our training, dedication and support to the firefighters.

Here is a report on the June 7, 2003 drill.
On Tuesday, May 20, 2003, approximately 30 CERT members worked on the City election. Using LAFD radios, they were posted at 19 of the election depots around the city. They were the communications link between the depots and election headquarters downtown, relaying requests for missing supplies, or for solutions to any problems that occurred, and finally the count of boxes and bags (of ballots) picked up from the depot.

2003 LA Marathon On Sunday, March 2, 2003, CERT members worked as volunteers at the LA Marathon. We helped runners for the last few feet to the Gatorade stand or to a person handing out foil blankets, passed out water along the marathon route, and some of us did first aid.
